For some 15 years most of northern Peru was too dangerous for birding but with the demise of the Shining Path, it has now become feasible to visit this stronghold of rare endemic birds. I joined 6 friends on a tour of northern Peru after fieldwork in Bolivia. The trip was organised and led for the first 2 weeks by Gunnar Engblom, assisted by Jonas Nilsson, with Willem-Pier Vellinga leading the latter part. We stayed throughout in cheap hotels, except for 2 nights on the floor of a restaurant and one in an open shelter in forest. It was very successful for sightings but gruelling logistically, partly due to poor road conditions. Highlights included an adult male Magnificent Spatuletail, Orange-throated Tanager, Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager, Great Spinetail, Royal Sunangel and all the Inca-Finches.
