BIRDING IN GUATEMALA: APRIL 1993 Jon Hornbuckle
I spent 10 days in Guatemala, the first half with a hire-car, predominantly in the highlands, and the latter half on foot at Tikal. Despite being one of the 5 most dangerous countries in the world, according to the British Foreign Office, I experienced no problems and have no hesitation in recommending Guatemala: great birds, scenery, ruins, local culture and weather (in April), and relatively cheap and friendly.
It is not as species-rich as countries further south such as Costa Rica and has no endemics, but the avifauna is largely a mixture of Mexican and Costa Rican birds. I saw 50 “lifers”, out of a total of 299, even after birding in Costa Rica and parts of Mexico, and missed others such as Great Curassow, Horned Guan, Azure- rumped Tanager and several owls. Guatemala also has the major attractions of the Tikal ruins, colonial Antigua and the highland markets, and can be done very cheaply by public transport if time is not a premium.
The only potential problem is robbery, said to be not uncommon, but except in Guatemala city (in which I did not stop), I doubt that the risk is higher than almost anywhere else in Latin America.
I flew in from Miami and collected a car from Budget, cheapest available prepaid – £33 per day with CDW and unlimited mileage. The snag, common to all hire-companies I believe, is that you have to pay the first $1200 if the car is damaged; this can be reduced to $600 by paying an extra $5 or so a day. The car, a Suzuki Swift GT, was trouble-free throughout the 1138 km I drove and cost approx $32 in petrol. Traffic was light except in Guatemala city and on the southern highway, which is best avoided.
Flights to Flores, for Tikal, left at 07.00 or 16.00 and cost from $100 return ( cf almost nothing on the bus but takes 11-20 hours ). Biotopo Quetzal is part-way to Flores and from there buses go to Coban and on to Flores. From Flores there are plenty of minibuses to Tikal, costing 20 Quetzal (= $4). US dollars are widely accepted.
I used Antigua, the old capital, as a “base” rather than Guatemala City. It is a wonderfully relaxed, colonial town of cobbled streets and crumbling edifices, with good hotels and restaurants, and very popular with folk wanting to learn Spanish (from $80 a week for accommodation, meals and classes!). The one real mistake I made was to fly to Tikal early on Thursday, because on that day and the next day, Good Friday, the country’s most spectacular processions are held in Antigua. Accommodation can be hard to find then and most public services such as banks are closed from Wednesday - Easter Sunday.
Food, and bottled water, is readily available, and varies from basic to excellent. Liquados, whisked juices of fruits such as pineapple or papaya, are delicious. I had almost no health problems but was bitten by various insects, even though they did not appear to be numerous.
It was hot and sunny throughout, cooler in the highlands, with only two short heavy showers. The only drawback to this was that visibility was often very hazy so that scenic views were disappointing. The rainy season at Tikal at least is June - October but apparently it usually only rains for an hour or so a day. Insects are worse then. Hours of daylight were approx 05.30 – 18.30; they vary by up to an hour during the year.
I visited, albeit briefly, all the major birding sites documented in reports by Barger & Gochfeld (1982), Hendriks & Maatman (1990) and Speight (1990). What is not described is the Maya Project, which started at Tikal in 1988: a small, dedicated team of Americans researching the breeding ecology of raptors, aided by Guatemalans and financed by the charity Peregrine Fund Inc. I made a modest contribution to their funds, and Russell Thorstrom, one of their top men, agreed to show me 3 raptor species at the nest. I saw Collared Forest-Falcon, Bicoloured Hawk and ornate Hawk- Eagle during one morning with him. Their base was to the east of the Uaxactun road c.200 m from the entrance gates to the ruins (ask for “el Fundo Peregrino“).

DAILY LOG
Saturday 3rd Left the pleasant Hotel Santa Clara (45 Quetzal a single) at 05.00, witnessing a silent Catholic procession of 150 people, to the Pan American Highway, west. Made 2 birding stops, the second along jeep tracks in a fine area of pine/oak forest 30 mins before the Chichi turn–off: first White-eared Hummer, Mountain Trogon, Black–capped Swallow, Rufous-collared Thrush, Grey Silky-Flycatcher, Pink–headed and Crescent-chested Warblers. Turned down the road to Solola and stopped at the second view-point overlooking Lake Atitlan, approaching Panajachel: Buff –breasted Flycatcher, Bushy-crested Jay and Rufous-capped Warbler.
Found cheap room (Q15 ); birded road and orchards alongside river, then the excellent Hotel Atitlan garden and adjacent woodland: Rufous Sabrewing, Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Blue-and – White Mockingbird, MacGillivray’s Warbler, Bar –winged Oriole and Prevost’s Ground –Sparrow, but no small hummers. Drove south up the hillside for 15+ km, seeing White-breasted Hawk and Brown-backed Solitaire but no good views of the lake. Finally, returned to hotel garden area but nothing new, so treated myself to a large pizza and 3 fresh orange Juices ( Q34 ).
Sunday 4th Noisy night; brief look at hotel garden then up the hill to the overlook again where walked along headland: Azure-crowned Hummer at last, Yellow-winged Tanager and Rusty Sparrow. Drove on towards Chichi, stopping at good pine forest above the only river - Green Violetear - but retreated on finding a posse of soldiers. Spent fascinating 2 hours or so at Chichi market, then tried B & G’s site 5km E of Nahuala but badly deforested. Brief visit to untouristy Nahuala market, then Km 172 where the remnant forest was unusually mature: Violet Sabrewing, Amethyst-throated Hummer, Cinnamon-bellied Flower–piercer, and a stunning Pink-headed Warbler at 2 metres.
Ate chicken, egg, rice, tortilla and bean-curd for Q8.75 at crossroads above Quezaltenango, then proceeded to Fuentes Georginas, arriving at 17.30. Last 8 km was very sandy but not steep. Rented bungalow for Q38.75 and swam in “hot” spring (only luke-warm). Birded at dusk: Garnet-throated Hummer, Blue –throated Motmot, Black Robin. A Fulvous Owl called briefly, while I had soup and beer, and longer in the middle of the cold night - had to get out my warm sleeping bag several times with the runs - maybe I should have bought a more expensive meal!
Monday 5th Up at 5.00: 3 Fulvous Owls calling and Highland Guans active at first light, but no Horned Guan. Good view of Ruddy-crowned Nightingale-Thrush and Green-throated Mountain-Gem. Took steep trail up to ridge - birdless until on the ridge where only new sp. was Cedar Waxwing. After checking out, drove straight down to Km 197 but rather hot at 10.15. Walked trails till 13.30, seeing little of note until reaching partly logged area where had Tawny-throated Leaftosser and Emerald Toucanet, then Spotted Nightingale-Thrush high in tree on way back.
Continued south to the Pacific highway, hoping to bird in lower Pacific slope habitat but failed to find any worthwhile. Road very busy, would have been better to have returned from Km 197 to the Panam highway. Had dust-covered car washed at garage while refueling and soon experienced only the day-time rain of whole trip! Long drive to the coast, arriving at 17.15, parked and took ferry at 17.30 to Monterrico - lots of bird-activity en route. “ Darlin Rooms“ for Q20, then walked Mangrove trail till dark, seeing single White-bellied Chachalaca, Paraque and many Common Nighthawk. This resort is a bit of dump and hot, but I slept well.
Tuesday 6th Up at 5.00 to track down a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl in a garden tree. Birded Mangrove trail and beyond, but disappointing - might have been better to take road along mangroves, from boat-dock at dawn, or boat/early ferry, to see post-roost activity: Banded & Rufous-naped Wrens, Mangrove Vireo, Black-vented Oriole and N American flycatchers and warblers.
Had 30 min wait for ferry; good view of Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture at other end. Stopped at small wetland near Safari Park and found 3 pairs of Rose-throated Becards but no waterbirds. Had difficulty in finding Royal Palm drive as it was 8km N of Escuintla, not 5 as B & G state: excellent foothill forest but midday, not much activity – Grey Hawk, Starthroat and Tityra. Drove straight through Guatemala city, which took some time, and east to the Motagua valley.
A few km before El Rancho, bore right on a track posted “El Jicaro 14 km“ and turned right again after c.200m. Parked and explored the desert for some time: Blue-tailed and Cinnamon Hummers, White-lored Gnatcher, Altamira and Streak-backed Orioles, but no Lesser Roadrunner. Turning NW up to Motagua valley, proceeded to Hendriks’ site down a dusty sideroad: good area of hillside scrub but little birdlife except Russet-crowned Motmot and Willow Flycatcher. Drove on up good main road into pine forest, finally reaching Biotopo del Quetzal at 17.45. Relieved by the coolness; Q28 for a “ collective “ (hostel bed) at the hospedaje - no-one else in my chalet. Dinner of steak, cottage cheese, beans, rice, tortillas, papas fritas, coffee and coke, for Q17. No nocturnal birds heard on walk along the road.
Wednesday 7th Woken by a noisy cockerel from 04.00 onwards, but still no owls. At first light a Highland Guan and Unicoloured Jays were in roadside trees. Stayed around the hospedaje from 06.00 - 06.45 as Quetzals were said to be seen daily, but not today - just as well I had them in Costa Rica; Blue-crowned Chlorophonia was a consolation. Took shorter trail on the reserve and had 2 Slate-coloured Solitaire showing well, duetting beautifully.
At 08.30 drove 4-5 km to the hotel: White-eared and Broad-tailed Hummers, Blue-crowned Motmot and Grace’s Warbler in gardens. The track opposite was birdless. Returned to reserve and took longer Moss Trail but too many tourists: Garnet-throated Hummer and Black-throated Jay (in small party of Unicoloureds) on upper reaches of trail.
Left hospedaje at 12.30, stopping again at hotel – Fork–tailed Emerald, Mountain Robin, Solitary Vireo and Black-headed Siskin - and then stopped after a further 10 km. Track into pine/oak forest gave a pair of Hepatic Tanager and more siskin, in a variety of plumages – Black –capped as well as Black-headed? Another track along river was unfruitful - habitat more varied but pines younger. Checked Hendriks’ desert stop at 15.00 -15.30 but no Lesser Roadrunner, so El Rancho track again: Brown-hooded Parrot and Varied Bunting. Drove non-stop to Antigua, through Guatemala city on faster northern route, arriving at 18.45. Far more people this time but one room available at Santa Clara. Ate at excellent Dona Luisa’s.
Thursday 8th Up at 04.15 for easy drive to Guatemala, but Aeropuerto road unfinished and no alternative signposted, so took some time to find the airport. Arrived at 05.30, easy check-in but bank shut till 08.00 . First cloudy day!
Boarded Aviateca flight ( full ) at 06.30; arrived at Flores 07.30. Minibus to Tikal ( Q20 ) delayed by a puncture so did not arrive till 09.30 - park entrance fee Q28. Tents at Jaguar Inn were the only accommodation available – Q50 including bedding – arranged to share with Canadian, Paul Matthews. We took the Caboa trail, which starts behind the Jaguar Inn and was surprisingly good considering the lateness of the morning: White–fronted Parrot, White-bellied Emerald, Chestnut-coloured Woodpecker, Barred Woodcreeper, Thrushlike Manakin, Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher, Rufous Mourner, Attila, Yellow-bellied Tyrannulet and Stub-tailed Spadebill, in addition to the common forest species.
A tour round the aguada ( ponds ) and hotel grounds gave a surprisingly good view of Ruddy Quail-Dove. Afternoon walk to Temple IV: Green-backed Sparrow, Painted and Indigo Buntings in scrub, then Pale-billed Woodpecker, Dot-winged Antwren, Dusky Antbird and White-tipped Dove along Uaxactun road. No Raptors at Temple IV but Crested Guan in Main Plaza. Discovered we had the only poor quality tent – much smaller than others, torn and zip broken. Distant thunder and lightening all evening. Ate at furthest comedore: generous portions, nice liquados, but little choice.
Friday 9th Heavy shower in the night but no mosquitoes, thankfully; cooler and cloudy in morning. Nighthawks on airstrip at dawn and Mottled Owl calling; Ruddy Crake at aguada and large flowering tree full of orioles and hummers - mainly Rufous-tailed but one Mango. Royal Flycatcher and Violaceous Trogon in scrub en route to Uaxactun road; Sepia-capped Flycatcher only new sp. along road but Tawny-winged Woodcreeper, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Worm-eating Warbler and female Black-throated Shrike-Tanager were seen on Temple IV trail.
At 11.30 walked length of airstrip, checking both ponds: American Pygmy Kingfisher, Grey-headed Tanager, Olive-backed and Yellow-throated Euphonias. Then took trail eastwards, initially through tintal forest: Jacamar, Antvireo and Slate-headed Tody-Flycatcher, with Brown-headed and White-crowned Parrots and Grey Fox on way back. Changed tents and took short siesta.
Late afternoon in ruins - birding poor but another Grey Fox and tracked down 2 rival groups of howlers which produced 30 mins of incredible noise directly overhead. Ate at Comedore Tikal: better selection of food, fresh orange-juice ( Q5 ) but no liquados.
Saturday 10th Early to ruins to look for Great Curassow - had to pay Q28 again (avoided yesterday by going later via Uaxactun rd). Trail to Complex Q gave good but brief view of Slaty-breasted Tinamou, plus Wedge-tailed Sabrewing and Spadebill, then up Temple V where Bat Falcon and Collared Aracari were prominent. At 09.45, raptor-watched for an hour from the dizzy heights of Temple IV: 2 pairs of White Hawk, pair of Bat Falcon and a single Black Hawk-Eagle. Two more Royal Flycatchers on trail to Uaxactun road, with familiar feeding flocks, then met Russel Thorstrum at Maya Project base. Farewell to Paul, at Jaguar Inn.
Afternoon on Caboa trail again: Thicket Tinamou, Toucanet at nest hole, Red-capped Manakin lek and male Black-throated Shrike-Tanager. Missed turn, too far on minor trails, so decided to head SW; immediately rewarded with Tody Motmot - most-wanted bird here - followed by nasty 30 mins hacking through tintal forest before hitting the trail, which proceeded W to the NE end of airstrip: Hooded Warbler and Black-faced Grosbeak. Six Plumbeous Kites hawked for insects, like Hobbies, over the aguada at dusk. Dined at Comedore Tikal with Russell who warned that the deadly Fer-de-Lance was common at night; pity my torch was dead.
Sunday 11th Up at 04.15 to find Russell in the dark at base-camp. Short journey along Uaxactun road on a Yamaha - struck by Yucatan Poorwill, presumably flushed from road! Forest walk for 30 mins to Collared Forest-Falcon site - bird calling as we arrived and female eventually gave good view before disappearing into nest-hole; also heard Barred Forest- Falcon and Vermiculated Screech – Owl. Next stop Bicoloured Hawk nest where female was sitting. She stood up and peered down but neither of the 2 males Russell had previously observed feeding her came. Back at base met Dave Whittaker, Maya Project leader, before taking another ride on the back of Russell’s motorbike. The target this time was Ornate Hawk-Eagle and fortunately both birds were visible near the nest, which saved having to climb 80 ft up a rope to the viewing platform, thank goodness.
After returning to base, looked nearby for White-collared Manakin lek - unsuccessful but did find Scaly-breasted Hummer lek (thanks to Ron & Marcia Braun’s report of it calling loudly from high trees). At 10.30 walked along airstrip to ponds - Blue Ground-Dove - and then back through forest on Airstrip trail: White-whiskered Puffbird and Long-billed Gnatwren. After murdering a 7-Up, took short siesta then tried scrub again for Manakin lek but only saw Jacamar. Walked along dry concrete ditch to Temple V and quiet trails to back to Temple IV: another Puffbird, Scaly- throated Leaftosser, 4 or 5 Ruddy Woodcreeper feeding excitedly with army ants, and pair of Blue Bunting. Sunset at El Mundo Perdido was a fitting close to last full day at Tikal. Shared tent with young Canadian doctor (who had most of her belongings stolen from a hire-car in San Jose, Costa Rica).
Monday 12th Airstrip trail at dawn: another Thicket Tinamou was a surprise but no Curassow. Nothing new at aguada but Uaxactun road to Temple IV trail gave Great Tinamou and Streak-headed Woodcreeper. Raptor-watching at Temple IV from 09.00-09.30 was very rewarding, with King Vulture, 2 Grey-headed Kite, Swallow-tailed Kite, Ornate Hawk- Eagle, and Bat Falcon harassing a Black Hawk-Eagle. Quiet after this excitement , with only a small “ buzzard “ to stimulate the adrenalin - too distant to identify. Further watch from EL Mundo Perdido gave nothing new, so returned to base via yesterday’s trail: stunning view of Spotted Wood-Quail, Leaftosser, and Yellow-throated Euphonia in song. Last attempt at White-collared Manakin was successful!
After fruit salad at Comedore Tikal, took 14.00 minibus to Flores. 16.00 flight was full but extra plane drafted in, so only 40 mins late. Decided to stay at Guatemala airport on hearing about Aeropuerto Guesthouse ( Q100 ) but short walk proved fruitless as it was full. Caught 18.15 minibus to Antigua ( Q40 ), which gave opportunity to eat at Dona Luisa’s again.
Tuesday 13th Minibus at 05.00 to airport for 07.15 flight to Miami and home. Great Trip!
