COLOMBIA: 25 June to 18 July 2015 Jon Hornbuckle
José Castaño Hernández, an excellent Colombian bird-guide, kindly invited me to join him on a trip to Mitu and Perija, two important sites in eastern Colombia which he had yet to visit. I decided to expand the trip to a partial clean-up in Colombia and invited Brian Foster and Rod Martins to join us. I gave José a list of birds I still needed after my previous three trips and he devised a 24 day itinerary, one week of which was devoted to Mitu. We omitted a few possible sites, notably Bahia Solano near the West coast and Inirida in the Northeast as both would have required return flights for only a few new birds, and other sites considered to be unsafe due to the drug-trade, eg in the far Southwest and near the Venezuelan border. Virtually all the itinerary was new to us except for Mitu which both Brian and I had visited in the 90s. José arranged all the logistics, based mainly on 4x4 vehicles, in which we covered considerable distances, and 4 internal flights. The main driver we used was very good and knew most of the sites: Juan Lopez perseusplus@yahoo.es
Food and accommodation were relatively cheap as José was able to avoid use of expensive ProAves lodges. The only real mistake was the daily use of an expensive 4x4 at Mitu instead of the local cheap mototaxis. Some birding time was lost due to rain, mainly at Mitu, but not a lot.
The birding was successful with most of our targets seen, notably: -
Semicollared Hawk, Gorgeted Wood-Quail, Tolima Dove, Rufous-fronted Parakeet, Indigo-winged and Yellow-eared Parrots, Andean Blossomcrown, Perija Metaltail, Perija Thistletail, Brown-banded Puffbird, Tawny-tufted Toucanet, Bar-bellied Woodcreeper, Chestnut-crested Antbird, Black Bushbird, White-bellied Dacnis and Mountain Grackle.
The main disappointments were the Antpittas – both Hooded and Cundinamarca were heard but not seen, the latter probably due to bad weather, and we failed to find Crescent-faced for Brian at two sites. The most surprising record was on the last full day when I got up pre-dawn to try to find Tawny-breasted Tinamou along the forested road near the Ventanus Peak farm where we were staying in the Yellow-eared Parrot Reserve. Jose had heard these Tinamous calling here earlier in the year but I failed to see or hear any, presumably due to the different time of year. However, I did see a Chestnut-bellied Cotinga perched up just after dawn but it flew off as I was preparing to photo it, never to be seen again. I was told this species has not been recorded from anywhere near here before and the record would not be accepted without definite evidence as it seems to be a rare bird in Colombia. I mentioned it to Barry Walker at the British Bird Fair a month later and he commented that there had been a recent single-person sighting record of this cotinga at a new site in Peru which was controversial especially as it was at a lower altitude than any previous record.
We are very grateful for all the help we received during this trip, especially by José Castaño Hernández <josefc11@gmail.com> who organized the entire trip apart from our international flights, Diego Calderon, Trevor Ellory, the local guides, and Barry Walker who identified the bird photos I was unsure of.

I learnt after the trip that the only site we visited where we could have seen the antpitta was Meremberg Reserve.
DAILY LOG
June 25-28: Arriving at Bogota late afternoon, we were met by Jose and taken to a cheap hotel on the way to Monte Redondo, the Cundinamarca Antpitta site. After an early drive to the site on 26th we spent a few hours on the track trying to see the one antpitta responding to playback. However it was rather dull and showery and the bird stayed in the thick undergrowth.
June 26: MONTE REDONDO birds of interest
White-throated (Andean) Toucanet, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Barred Antshrike, Cundinamarca Antpitta – Heard only, Long-tailed Tapaculo and Green-and-black Fruiteater (Heard), Black-collared Jay, Golden-fronted Redstart,
Superciliaried Hemispingus, Blue-and-black and Beryl-spangled Tanagers, Russet-backed Oropendola.
We had to return to Bogota airport to catch the afternoon flight to Valledupar. From there we drove towards the Perija mountains and found a cheap hotel at Caqueza.
The morning of 27th was spent in the remnant patches of mid-elevation woodland, seeing the nearly endemic Perija Tapaculo and Moustached (split) and Black-fronted Brush-Finches. Afternoon was on the paramo at 3200m looking for Perija Thistletail and Metaltail, both found fairly quickly, along with a few other good species, notably Rufous- breasted Chat- Tyrant and Perija (Golden-bellied) Starfrontlet. On the way down to Manaure, where we stayed the night, a few nightjars were seen including Band- winged of the form ruficervix, a likely new species (Nigel Cleere in litt.). Early the next day we returned to the mid-elevation Perijá mountains until 10.00, then drove a long way west to Bucaramanga and on to San Vicente de Chucuri where we found a hotel for the night.
June 27-28: PERIJÁ MOUNTAINS birds of interest

Jun 29-30: After a short drive to look for Niceforo’s Wren below the Cerulean Warbler Reserve, we continued to the nearby hummer feeders, where Gorgeted Woodstar was a highlight, and then on to the CWR trails. I walked up to the drier woodland where Mountain Grackle is sometimes seen, but not by me, whilst lower down the others had good views of Rusty-breasted Antpitta. Late afternoon we returned to San Vicente de Chucuri for a better view of Niceforo’s Wren and spotted a perched Common Potoo. Night at last night’s hotel.
An early start the next day saw us at 05.30 at the Gorgeted Wood-Quail feeder site in the CWR forest. No WQs came to the food but one was calling and responded to play-back, giving brief views. More time on the trails was not rewarding but the hummer feeders outside the forest did give us a rare male Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird. Good views of a Yellow-browed Shrike-Vireo, a bird that had eluded me on previous Colombian trips, were the final success before we returned to the car for the long afternoon drive towards the Taoist Temple, eventually finding a hotel for the night at the old town of Charala .

July 1: After a two hour drive we arrived at the Taoist Temple that Jose and his wife had often visited and seen Mountain Grackle, a bird often difficult to find elsewhere. Sure enough, we soon saw several pairs just outside the temple gates and were able to watch their activities for some time, including one with a nest. Mountain Cacique and Epaulet Oriole were also present. We had local food at the temple, met some of its inhabitants and heard about its history, before departing for Tuja. Here we changed money, had lunch, said farewell to our excellent driver and took a bus to Bogota. Jose booked us into one large room at Hotel Real Estacion near Bogota airport for the night.

MITU https://birdsofpassage.wordpress.com/2015/07/08/mitu/ is a very detailed and well-written blog by Kathi and Josh of their birding visit to Mitu from June 13 – 23, slightly longer and just before our visit. kathiandjosh@gmail.com . They stayed at the same hotel as us, used the same local guides and saw many of the same birds plus quite a few we did not record. They deal with issues such as the need for permission from the local indigenous communities, arranging and paying local guides, transport, etc, so I am not going to describe this here except to state Diego Calderon’s advice to me, which is bound to be good, to get in touch before a visit to Mitu, with Jorge Gonzalez (jorgekaji@gmail.com) and/or Gloria Amparo Rivera (griverav@misena.edu.co) from Etno Aves Vaupés, preferably by emailing them in Spanish.
